All I ever needed to learn, I learned from my Great Danes.
The “greatest” thing about Great Danes is not their size; it’s…

their personalities. At 70 years old, I have had 26 of these babies in my long life. My love affair with these Gentle Giants started when I was 22, and I’ve never been without 1,2…7 at a time since then.
To be loyal to a Great Dane requires a deep dive into your own soul, because that’s where they live. They are one of the most “surrendered” breeds. The excuse? “ I didn’t know they were gonna get that big.” If you had even glanced at what they are called, you may have gotten a hint!
What I have come to know is not only do they not know how HUGE they really are, but they also don’t realize what a profound difference they make in your life. They are more than a companion; they are your soul’s mate. The joy in their eyes (and their tails) is incomparable compared with other dogs I have owned. They can feel when a gentle lick and a quiet posture right beside you is all you need.

Out of 26 Danes I only purchased 7. The remaining 19 were someone else’s “problems.” Whether starved, abused, neglected, surrendered, lost or abandoned, I never turned down a Dane if I was called about one in need. A rescued Dane shows you with every breath they draw that you, alone, are what matters to them most of all. It is no wonder that they are a necessity in my life. They ground me. They let me know that even though life brings you many “ulterior motive” characters, their only motive is to be with you.
It’s not just sunrise and sunsets and flowers or woods and the streams that put color and motion in my life, it is the ancient connection of what a dog, most assuredly, a Dane, brings to my very soul.
